I was born and raised in San Diego, CA and so I can identify with your description of them in your yard---as a kid for me it was the garage. The garage was loaded with them. So I assumed when I moved to Austin, it would be the same----widows everywhere-----but NOT SO. Here in central TX we do have them but the numbers do not come close to those of So CA. I've theorized that it is our more humid rainier weather---that widows prefer drier climates. Whatever the reason, I don't miss them. The species here could also be different---I've never checked into that. Good article...
