| Whoo hooo!
For years, hubby has had various animals which required
penning. Now that we are farm animal-free, we have extra
cattle panels, which he has used on occasion for gardening. After
hinting, asking and pestering him to let me use them elsewhere,
he agreed.
Lo and behold, I have four giant cattle panels to do with as I will!
I placed one arching over the garden walk going to the daylilies
(they are in there somewhere among those weeds, I know they are)
one over the bridge going to the bamboo grove, one by the grapes
and berries and one more to do something with.
I'm squealing with delight and wanted to share.
An old picture to show the arch they will become. Wow. Things have
really grown in since this image was taken!

Okay, what are cattle panels? Are they flexible? |

| Hi Boo,
Cattle panels are typically made with 14 gauge galvanized rod welded together
in a grid pattern about 50" x 16 feet long. They run about 18.99 in our area.
Not very flexible, but will bow into an arch with steel bars
pounded into the ground next to it & wired tight. If you have a small
vehicle, you may be able to talk someone into helping you roll it up
like a tortilla, then strap it together with cable ties for the ride home.
Mind you, the 'tortilla' will still be large. You can get hurt trying to work
it by yourself, so be careful if no one is there to assist.
If you don't have the space to make a big rounded arch, you can
(with help) 'fold' it in half and crease on the top just a little. This will
give you a taller arch with smaller width.
No doubt you have a source in Phoenix, you might check with your
local farm supply stores. On second thought - farms in Phoenix?
LOL

| Wuv it, Wuvie!
I have a new extra one from this year; I think I'll make an archway. Surely I can find something to grow on it... and in fall or early spring, move my hops plant to climb on it for next year.
Thanks for the reminder! |

Hi Dahtzu and Darius,
The vine is Silver Lace Vine, though I must mention it has
taken years to fill in.

| Oh, Cheryl, way cool!
We have a walkway between the house and the garage.
Hubby doesn't know it, but I'm sure contemplating a cattle
panel run all the way down it. LOL.
Very neat! |

| Hmmm WUVIE now you got me to thinking about a covered walkway.. But what would grow so fast to cover it and come back year to year?
Also bumping this threat up for Catlin, incase the link didn't work.. lol..

| Thanks, this is a great idea, and as we have a dairy farm there are lots of cattle panels around, although most are in use. I have another area this would be perfect for, but the place I need the arch for the clematis needs something that isn't more than about 1' wide... |

| Wuvie, where do you get the strength to do such hard sounding things...this one and others you have posted? And how do you think of all your creative ideas? You are a super smart and talented lady and I love following your posts. Keep um coming.

| Ha! So fun! I took some photos of this very same idea at someone's place a few years ago. I have not located it (to post) but it was the very same concept in a very shabby chic awesome flower garden. They has put in corner posts, but with your idea I see that's not necessary!
Those stock panels can be located at any fair sized farm & feed store. |

| LOL!!! caitlinsgarden~~ What did I say, nothing but cows and corn!!!.. lol.. I loved Iowa but the hard winters were to much for my body to handle (RA :-( ) Anyway, Im glad you can use the idea somewhere else on the farm.. Maybe you could still use the panels for the frame and then cover them with something with a smaller hole.. Say chicken wire? Shoot Im not even sure if the plant you are talking about covers everything. If not then Im sure you wouldnt want the wire showing..

| That red honeysuckle covers well and is beautiful . Comes back and if you keep it off the ground , isn't invasive . Could plant it in big planters . Just stay away from the native yellow and white stuff . digger |

| Wuvie, How great.
I don't have any cattle panel arbors yet but I have seen so many interesting uses for them. You can spray paint them to add interesting color or a more finished look. Use wood posts with a decorative finial at the top wood stained with a black spray painted panel or all painted white for a different look.
This was posted on a thread about arbors.

| ug. i tried so hard this year to get two panels and tie them together up at the top so I would have a very tall, and
also spread out wide pass thru to our front garden. I couldn't handle them myself, and when DH came home,
took one look and took it down, away and in an inaccessible spot. sigh. he has this wanting to build it like a
gorgeous picture from a menards flyer with wood and lintels and seats and stuff, and all I wanted was a covered
tall reutilized hog panel. I was going to grow my zepherine drouhin s up it, but its all mute point now, as they
died anyhow from the thaw we had last winter in january when everything started growing. omg. we lost most
of our gardens from that global warming disaster. hundreds of rhododendrons, azaleas, etc. etc. roses to
say the least.
anyhow, I wanted to tie the arbors together up top, and make it almost church looking as you walked under it
with the roses covering it. later on I was planning on building some simple benches for the inside. I figured on
about 10 feet wide and the panels were 16 feet high.
if I could only get one of my old friends out here, they would help me.
