I have never tried dahlias before, but ordered 3 'Showtime' from Burpee on a whim (there was a blizzard going on at the time), and they just arrived - they are a short type, as a beginner I thought I'd better start small!.
They were horribly packed and the entire stem on one was broken off, and a second had the main stem broken off and only a couple little side stems left; they're in the pic below.
