| I love this forum and have lurked in the background marveling at all the creative ideas you folks have. I was hoping you might be able to offer a couple of ideas on what to do with this galvanized vent hood. When upside right, it looks a bit like a witches hat. When flipped over, a very pointed basin. I thought about a bird bath, but I think it's too deep. Or a hanging flower basket? or the basin for some type of fountain...anyway, if you had it what would you do with it?
btw - is there some way to post two pictures to the same post? or do I just have to do two posts? I'm a bit of a DG newbie. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Good thinking ...a hanging basket, just drill a few more holes in the bottom for drainage and spray paint it (or not). |

| some silver ghost plant would look great in that, if you make it into a hanging basket:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/351/
I can't tell from the picture, but it looks kinda large...is it about the size of a birdbath basin?
You could always still use it as a basket, but instead of hanging it, you could mount it on top if a large diameter galvanized pipe, to sorta imitate a birdbath look, but still be a planter.
does that make any sense? |

| This is my 2 cents worth on that vent hood. Don't they use something similar on the post of bird feeders to keep squirrels from climbing up to eat bird feed. It would look better than some that I have seen that look cheap. You could paint to match if need be. The galvanized will not rust will it? Of course you would have to cut a hole for the post. scraps |

| scraps- I actually had the very same thought about the squirrel baffle, but thought it might look too functional/industrial. I guess with paint you can make it more subtle...
But, if you need a baffle, it would certainly be a good one!

| i thought of a bird bath too--i like that idea---or a bird feeder-again with something to fill in the bottom to raise up the food
i also think you could bury it so that only the top 3 inches or so show and put a few succulents in it or some flower you'd like to sort of frame and highlight in the garden--with holes drilled in the bottom |

| When I looked at it my mind instantly invisioned a great big Tin Man Hat. Body a Galvanized trash can, Arms and legs of galvanized pipe, Head out of a smaller can...
standing in the middle of a flowerbed ... Holding a watering can in one hand and waving with the other. I got so enthralled in what he looked like that I couldn't "see" anything else! |

| Oh zany I absolutely love your idea!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I could weld and I would make me one maybe I could figure out a way without it. I have a strainer thingy somewhere in my shed that looks similar. I think you use it when canning tomatoes or something. It may not be as big but similar shape. I think I could come up with the stuff when I have to clean shed out to move to new house I may try it too. Great ideas come from Dave's garden T2T. |

| lol oh thank you for all the good cheer, yep he has quite the imagination!
actually the original tin man the small one in the middle of the pictures is from hobby lobby web site we printed that out and he made 4 or 5, then his imagination went wild and he started to add things then he created thease, he is a crafter but lol he says in his macho way look what i've been reduced to a tin man maker( dont let him fool you for a minute) he loves to make them!
it was his step mother who works for a fire station that inspired him to do those two went for a silent auction at the fire house and the indian went to a dear friend in chicago, another dg member.
oh but i might add that the themed tin men, cost roughly about 50.00 to assemble with all the accessories so to sell them at a craft show might be a little pricey, but were going to try in october and see what it would bring in, the basic tin men probably 10- 12.00
but the more i look at that vent hood, oh i would love to have a full size one,

| Liz, Those are adorable.I am like digger, I can't wait to go through all my junk and see what I can come up with. I certainly could not do one as nice but I think one made of junk would be cute too. But I am in the middle of building a house and then a new yard to create so it is on the back burner for now. This house business is too slow when doing the work yourself. It has been almost a year(July) since we poured concrete. No time for crafting. I am so jealous. |

| Poke a small drainage hole, paint it a bright color, maybe add some large red painted ladybugs on it. Add a chain, plant it with spider plants or hanging fuschia. Then hang a hummingbird feeder above it and you will have a beautiful planter not to mention winged visitors. I have done this with many pots, pans and other kinds of planters and I have hummers all year long. ( No. California area)
