About a year ago Lowes delivered a fridge to me. In order to get "through" my gate (which they also bent up with their truck) they veered off the driveway and came about a foot from a 3 year old Washingtonia Robusta. It crushed the roots on one side, and it lost half its leaves.
It came back some, had a decent crown, survived a cold winter, and all of a sudden last week went South. A picture would show it brown--pretty much dead, no crown. Since I am stubborn I went to water it right straight down the crown and this striped orange beetle popped out (see attached pic). The folds of the trunk also were revealed to contain numerous smaller black beetles (see alongside). I jarred these guys alive and sprayed the tree/soil with a fungicide-miticide-insecticide. Then I noticed the orange beetle eating up the black ones in the jar.
So my question is this: is anyone aware of such a beetle that spreads disease and eats crowns (because I have a whole row of healthy ones right there), or black beetles that do similar damage? I don't want to kill otherwise beneficial predators...none fo the other trees have these.
