Sammut I really love those bottles, and like the others I want to know where you got the red cones. Did you use regular craft paint on them? It sure beats the price of those aqua bowls they have for your plants. I bought some and they are pretty, but your bottles are pretty too and sooooooo much cheaper. And I just let DH take all my plastic bottles to recycle, guess I better start collecting some more.

I've used the aqua globes (glass) and they are pretty & work good, but I would prefer to make my own for a lot cheaper. Wal-Mart has them, 2 in a box, for $9.88 which is cheaper than I paid and didn't have to pay postage. Grrrr makes me mad when I don't find a bargain.

Haven't had a chance to look around for the cones, but DH said he saw some in blue, but can't remember where. Now that doesn't help me a bit. We usually go together when shopping for things like this so must have been in stores I've been in. I don't ever remember seeing them in our 99 cent store, but there are a few other dollar plus stores around. I may end up ordering on line too.

Ladies,

I have some of those spikes. Now I don't want to burst any bubbles, but they really don't work that well. They get filled with dirt and the water won't come out. I have tried all kinds of different ways to get them to work and they just don't. One time I had them working thought "Oh good plants will be ok while I was gone for a week" Came home and the water was still in the bottle and plants were half dead. So if one of you get them to working good, PLMK :-)

I found with the aqua bowl feeders that I use in my house plants that it will clog up with dirt too, but the water still flows out. I make a hole in the dirt before I put the glass bowl in so the stem won't break. I hope someone comes up with the solution on the cones as I am so interested in trying to find some.

Sammut always has great projects going. Waiting patiently for DH to finish up the shade screening project. He doesn't work very long on it before he gets tired out. I can hang some of my plants from the wooden beams. Well, he is proud of putting up this shading for my raised bed so I have to patiently watch it go up. I've some some treasures from the thrift store I want to use out there too.

Sammut you do come up with some neat ideas. I've been trying to clear out a front flower bed as the grass and weeds got out of control. I would like to put some tipsy pots on one end. DH has some watering pipes at that end so I might have some problems there. At least the pots would help hide the white pvc pipes.
Have to ran that idea pass him and see what he says. I do have a lot of nice baby tear growing at the back of garage where it stays shady. Only spot for shade plants I have. I put in a couple plugs last year and it really has taken over.

Hi Sammut, I like your idea about the watering cans. No, I didn't finish the bowling ball, shame on me. But when I do I will post it.

Looking through a cataloge I got in the mail for watering spikes. Well, DH looked through it and lo and behold he found them. The cataloge is Carol Wright Gifts and there are 4 in a set for $2.99. I got on line and ordered some and now can't wait to get them. Carolwrightgifts.com and the item # is 17460 in case anyone is interested. They mention using a liter bottle so guess I will have to save a few of them. Took the last batch of bottles for recycling, well no more. I'll recycle them. DH said they would make nice gifts, but I want to be sure they work for me first. I don't have many friends who are into gardening so I'll have to change them. DH is taking big bows for finding them.

Always the busy one. I do see you love the spider plants. I have a smaller one I am going to put in a hanging pot. I have some nice nylon cord (thrift store buy) that I'll use for hanger.

The DH is so busy right now trying to hook up the converter box to the TV for the digital. Not in a good mood, so I'm not talking to him right now. That TV set comes first before anything else. My news come from TV and Internet too. He put a converter box on one in bedroom and it works fine. That isn't hooked up to satelitte though. All this electronic stuff just boggles my mind.

Okay guys...I need your help. I've used the watering spikes for years in my containers. It takes some adjusting. If the hole punched in the spike is too big, the water will just flow out too fast. If the hole is not big enough it will plug. My goal is to have the water last in a 2 liter bottle at least 24 hours or longer. I have both types of spikes, ones with the valve and the ones you punch a hole in. The ones with the valves sometimes don't control well. I'm thinking this is because air gets in from the threads and keeps the valve from regulating. I'm going to get some water hose gaskets and see if that helps with control.

I've also been known to take my old I.V. lines from the hospital when either I or family members have been in the hospital. I either drill or punch a hole in a one gallon bottle insert the I.V. tubing in the hole and seal the tubing to the bottle on the out side with Aquarium sealant or some other sealant that dries pliable. I fill the gallon bottle with water and regulate how much water I want to come out and insert the dripping end in the container. I only use this on very large containers.

Now...my problem... You guys are so imaginative. I need some guidance. My old 2 liter bottles I use with my water spikes are getting brittle. My family has been buying 3 liter drink bottles now. The bottle opening on the 3 liter bottles are larger than the opening on the water spikes anf they will not fit. I need something that would bridge that gap. the OD of the 3 liter bottle tops are about 1.5 inches...the OD of the water spike is 1.25 inches. I'm retired from the petrochem research industry and I remember seeing large diameter tygon tubing or rubber. Does anyone think that would work and would it be feasible for a retiree's budget. Where can I get large OD tygon or rubber tubing. Can anyone think of any economical way to use these two items together?

I even read on the Frugal Gardening Forum where this guy/ gal takes 6 to 12 inch lengths of drip line hose (small diameter available at Walmarts) and the little spikes that connect hoses. He/ she insert the spikes into the bottom of the bottles, connect a hose piece and have a slow waterer. Twice per week, he/she fills the containers from rain barrels and the plants get a nice deep watering.

I'm not familiar with the drip line hose or connectors but that would solve my problem too. It would give me another way of using my 3 liter bottles. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give.

Hi ColibricGardener ,
I tryed the drip line hose and water connection spikes but too many pots it ended up hose lines every where not a good look but it did work .
Iam toying with a idea of a soaker hose hanging above the pots blocking the holes not needed connected to a large drum with a tap turn on when watering then off just like a mini water tank water colleted from the guttering when it rains .

Yes, Sammut, DH got his TV set all connected, but I asked about the VCR. Well, it looks like he didn't connect that up. Now back to our outdoor project... You really do have a lot of hanging plants! Until he has that big project of his done I don't have a place to hang too many, but one of these days I'll have lots of room.

Nice garden Sammut...it's looks so calming and relaxing.

I finally took pictures of my I.V. plant drippers. This one was made from a large plastic vinegar bottles. I have Coral Honeysuckle in this container along with some spring blooming bulbs and salvia.

This I.V. dripper is keeping a large mixed containers of Tobasco peppers and Lady in Red Salvia alive in our 95 degree + heat and humidity. We're having a mini drought here. We haven't had any appreciable rain in a month.

No shade cloth covering up yet. Well I did have it up but only temperary and DH says it is going to be permanent. I just don't know when permanent is going to be. Hoping to get out there sometime tomorrow. He has to have a cat scan run in the morning, so there goes another day shop.

Can't believe you have so many plants, must keep you busy watering them. I planted some moon flower seeds and they have sprouted. I can't remember just what they look like and also a snail vine. If I can keep them alive it will be great.

That is some watering system you have Colibri, very creative. Our heat hasn't gotten bad yet, but our hottest months are just coming up.

My watering spikes came from Carol Wright today. Four in a package for $2.99. I tried one on a bottle to make sure it fits. Just too tired to find out just how good it works. Went to favorite thrift store and found a few things I "really needed". DH found me a small shepherd hook for 65 cents, big enough to hang something small on. People put things in the strangest places, can't put them back where they found them. Bright orange spikes look like carrotts so may I should paint the green stems on the bottles.

Set up doctor appt. for July 9th for DH so will know what the scan showed. I'm in a postive mode right now.

Hi Pegi,
Good idea the green tops to make them look like carrots growing .
Things you really needed sounds interesting .
I have a new project finished forgot to import so will post in a few minutes .

Stay postive waiting for the results is the worse part.

DH is almost through with "his" part of the garden patio. He attached the screening to two long boards and then he will secure the boards to main posts. That way he can move the screen to clean off all dead needles, etc. that fall of pine trees. Here is beginning of his project.

Now I have the clean up job. Going to paint the bed of the garden and thinking of putting something on for decoration. I hope he puts up my swing now on one end and after removing ladders it might begin to look OK. I need to give the posts, there are 3, another coat of paint as they got messed up during the construction.

Here I am in the wee hours of the morning playing around when I should be in bed.

I have a couple of chairs that I want to make into plant chairs, but have to clean them up and paint them first. Hoping to do that after we finish with this project. I planned on doing that last summer, but other things came first. I have a few small wind chimes I'd like to hang out there too. I've seen other head boards in members gardens and I always wanted one, so when I saw this one at the thrift store I had to get it. I was surprised when he put it up for me without my asking him.
