Hey everyone,
I've never posted here, but I love anything trash-to-treasure. We are currently remodeling our kitchen. I need to build or find cabinets. Do any of you have ideas on building or repurposing something for cabinets?
Thank you so much for any ideas.

Also check with cabinet shops...often they have "mistakes" and are willing to let them go cheaply.

If I ever get the chance to "do" my kitchen, I will tear everything out to the walls and use actual furniture pieces...old, definitely not new. Have seen it done on one of the tv shows.
You might google and find it on HGTV, DIY...numerous choices. Now you've got me thinking again about my own kitchen.

Oh my goodness, LouC that is just what we are doing. We tore the kitchen down to bare bones and started over. I added an antique kitchen sink and base which I got for a steal at only $90. I have my antique Hoosier cabinet already. Now I am looking to add those few remaining unique pieces to finish the kitchen out. I had an idea late last night to build narrow shelves on either side of my stove and then make beadboard doors to cover them. That will look good. I will blog about our kitchen redo with before and after photos at my cottage blog. You can find my blog by following the links from my Web site. My Web site is listed under Homepage at my info page here at Dave's. That way you all can see how I incorporate your ideas in to my kitchen.
Thank you everyone for the ideas. You have been very helpful.
Blessings,
Stephanie

Just thumbed through some of my old Mary Englebrite Home Campanion magazines and there it is!!!! They even took an old "French Provencial" style dresser from the 60's and backed to a simple cabinet from a big box store, then put a solid top across it. Using it for and island. Everyone is using granite but I really don't understand why. There is a place in our community that makes a surface that looks just like it. Something like Corian. If I can find the pictures, I will post them. Good for you! Yea! I, too have an old Hoosier and it is loaded.

Hey Christi
I made a bathroom sink from an old French Provencial dresser. After I saw the outrageous prices on the new dresser type sinks, I found an old dresser, bought a sink, cut the hole and popped that sink in there. Ta-dah...French Provencial bathroom sink for very little cost.
In my kitchen, the sink base which came with the antique sink we bought has a tongue and groove top. I love it. And my husband just found a ton of old (more than 100 years old) tongue and groove boards. We will likely use some of them to make an island for the kitchen. Or something else. I cannot wait to finish my kitchen. I am already loving it, and the water is not even hooked up yet! Smiles.

Hey Cheryl,
I will get to work on that. It's a bit hard for my now to take photos. I'm laid up with torn ligaments in my ankle. Even with crutches and splint my foot kind of wobbles around. Yuck, it's too bazarre to talk about. I do have photos on my computer. I'll look them up, but since we are still working on our bathroom and kitchen there are no photos of the completed work. I will add photos of the completed work at my New Moon Cottage and Gardens blog once we complete it. I prefer to upload my photos there. Still I'll add a few here at Dave's once we complete all. Photos help to spur the imagination. At least mine.
Blessings,
Steph

Hey Cheryl,

I saw your post about the tub...Did you know that you can porcelain it yourself. I did one about 15 years ago. I found the tub in my grandparents pasture and 3 claws..(thank god for one side against a wall and a concrete block that could be chipped away and painted lol) I believe that we bought it at a home store (depot, lowes) HAD to have been cheap cuz we were young with 3 small kids and 300 a week. The outside of the tub a took a wire brush to. and to again and again. Ended up turning out really nice. It is worth a look. The pricing I got for a pro was WAY out of my league. Hope that helps.

Cheryl..

I am sure that sand blasting the outside of the tub would be ok...however, I am not sure how to go about protecting the porcelain. I am sure that who want to cause no further damage to it. Like I said, I did my best with a wire brush on the outside of mine. It took awhile...and several times to get to the point that I felt like it was okay to paint. But times where tough and I did my best with what I had. The porcelain was actually pretty easy to do. I was surprised. I did the outside of it first...paint and all and then the inside. I wish I could remember now what that stuff was called but like I said...15 years or more and waayyy to many kids to remember.
Best of luck with your project! If I can think of anything else about it I will let you know.

Elle
