I want to use white sand as a landscape feature, and can see the obvious pitfalls of simply dumping it all over the place. I would like to use it in my meditation garden, which is a little oval of grass, apart from the rest of the garden. I guess I could build a sandbox for it, but are there any other ideas? I would love my plants to just naturally fall over the edge of the sandy space. I have already planted tropical plants around the area, have a small water feature that burbles, and the area is fairly well shaded.
I have seen one yard featured in Sunset, where a guy made a sand beach in his backyard, with polynesian tiki carving standing in it. It was cool, but not inviting to sit barefoot and relax.
Here is what we call our "Isle of Dreams" complete with coral reef, lobster pot and lobster, treasure chest, palms and tropicals, fountain, anchor and conch shells and an old ship wheel.
This is the ship wheel and the palms are in pots and just buried in the ground, that way I can lift them for the winter. I did overwinter them several years ago, but it was a lot of work wrapping and insulating them, easier to just lift.
We sit out there quite a lot as you can imagine and have some wine and smell the roses! Hope this inspires your enchanted island theme.
It was a bit expensive but I bought steel edging and molded it around the entire isle so the stones don't get strewn around in the grass. You can't really even notice it as the stone comes to just about even with the top edges.
