In our part of far northern Michigan, cutworms are a big problem in new garden spaces, especially. I've used the twig next to the stem technique for years and have found it very effective. I gather it works better on the cutworms that cut things off right at soil level, which is the kind we have here, than on cutworms that climb the stems and cut higher. Our two pet yellow-bellied slider turtles adore cutworms, and most years we have a resident toad in the garden who is happy to get them, also. They also like wireworms, slugs, and white grubs. It's a most satisfactory way to dispose of garden pests, if you garden organically, so the turtles and toads are not poisoned.
