You might also consider keeping a bottle of hand sanitizer in the tool shed and/or near the back door. It's easy to rub on your hands a time or two when you pass by, and most of them contain a good moisturizer so they won't dry out your hands as much as soap does. Obviously, it won't remove the dirt, but if you don't need to remove dirt so much as to kill germs, it does do that. When you come inside and pass by the sink be sure to wash your hands then. According to several studies, the sanitizer is just as effective as soap in getting rid of germs -- hence it's use in hospitals and doctor's offices. Sometimes it's easier to get kids to use it than to get them to wash their hands.
