Hello all,
Here in Central PA we have a lot of very hard rainstorms in the spring. I am trying to pick out tulip bulbs for next year, and was hoping you would share with me if you've found varieties that stand up well with strong rain and/or wind.

I like the Greigii and Kaufmania types. They are shorter but have fairly large flowers for their height and are very reliable as a perennial. The Fosteriana or Emperor Tulips are also shorter, but taller the first 2 mentioned. The Triumph Tulips are nice and don't have that real large heavy flower that the Darwins have. They have many different colors and a " regular" tulip flower shape. I have had fairly good luck with Darwins but plant them deep 8-9 inches deep and bad weather doesn't seem to effect them. I live near the coast and have some fairly stiff winds and all I have mentioned stand up very well. A good source for tulip bulbs is Van Engelen Bulb Co. if you are looking to buy bulbs in large quantities. If you are looking to buy smaller amounts they have a sister company, John Sheepers.
