I bought six 4 in. plants and put them out in 20 gal. plastic trash barrels on May 7--pretty late for here. A month later, they're growing like weeds. The warmth I can feel down in the soil tells me the soil bacteria are active.

I've got a Caspian Pink, a Brandywine, a Better Boy, a Chocolate Cherry, a Grapette--and what I think is a dwarf Roma. (It was labeled only as "Patio.") The Caspian and the Brandywine just started flowering heavily, and the others are full of tomatoes. The full-sized plants are about 3 ft by 3 ft.

I used Kellogg's potting soil, with a handful of balanced dry fertilizer mixed into each barrel. I added some Amend and shredded redwood bark as a 2-3 in. thick mulch. My plants get 7 to 8 hours full sun, and I give them all the fertilizer they can handle. I'm thinking of working in some gypsum, too. A little more sulfur and calcium can't hurt.
