Thought to have originated in the Mediterranean. Calssified as a "broccoletto" type of brassicas. Plant is distinct vegetable that is also grown for it's flowering shoots. Attractive, vigorous, fast growing, easy to grow and delicious. In temperate areas seeds can be sown at any time during the growing season. It is not too fussy about the climate. It can grow in fairly warm weather and can tolerate a little frost if it is past the seedling stage. In cooler areas, delay sowing or setting out seedlings until mid-spring - otherwise plants may bolt prematurely. It is best to grow in fertile, moisture retaining soil. If you are planning to harvest as a young plant (cutting the whole plant as the flowering shoots start to appear) allow about 45 days for it to reach this stage. The plants being grown to harvest early can be grown successfully in containers and closer together (about 6 inches apart) that the larger plants that are being grown for multiple harvests. Larger plants that will be allowed to mature will require about 60-70 days and will require more space. Set plants about 10-15 inches apart. With these cut the main flowering shoot first, make this cut just before the first flowers open. Side shoots that can be cut will continually grow over a long period of time. In hot weather, growth is usually very fast and plants should be harvested continually or shoots may become tough and plant may bolt.
