Used to have many. Only see one breeding pair since the eye disease decreased numbers around the country.
Eat at backyard feeder together. Roost in crepe myrtles and in light fixture over front door. Nested in light fixture last summer;successfully raised babies there. Made nest of pine straw which eventually caused bottom glass to fall out of fixture. I could not use light for fear of "roasting" babies. After babies left, I used light, caused pine straw to scortch. mother "tossed" nest out eventually so she could use fixture for fall/winter roost. Probably warmer up there, no wind. Safe from predators.
Are becoming a bit of a problem due to contention for "my" light fixture. also makeing mess on porch floor right at front door. Visitors may not like being painted.Back to scutler's Journal homepage.
