NOT FOR BEGINNERS - DIFFICULT TO GROW
Catalog says Zone 5-10 but DG says Z 7-9.
This plant loves acid and must be kept moist at all times. Even one day of being dry can kill it.
Plant in BOG for summer, this should be perfect with acid and moisture needs.
Not sure what to do during winter because it must be kept dry over winter or bulb will rot.
I will probably dig out of bog and burry a pot in the ground in a very protected place like in the woodland garden or along the log wall (or both, up near the Helleborus).
Blooms May to June.
Sagi-so means Crane Weed in Japanese. REsembles a Japanese Crane (Grus japonensis). The birds are considered auspicious (long-life, fertility) and so the orchid.
This orchid is being poached in Japan and soon will be extinct.
Will not tolerate dry heat above 90º, so be sure to water and spray every day if it's hot and dry.
Sun to part shade, so the bog will be great.Back to DiOhio's Journal homepage.
