Since I cannot fill up my Journal with live, growing plants, green lawns and flowers I might as well note the weather conditions as they unfolded this year. Our winter had been mild and relatively uneventful through December and January into the first week of February. However, that scenario changed dramatically in the early morning hours of February 13. An enormous blizzard-like storm swept accros the mid section of the country from Nebraska and Iowa into Illinois, Indiana and Ohio moving east. Again, I find myself saying, "I cannot remember a storm quite this furious with the record snow fall and bitter temperatures". I well remember the winters of 1977 & 1978; and they certainly were on a level with this one! These conditions lasted well into early March 2007, and I found myself pushing snow for most of two weeks! My vehicles were imprisoned within the garage for at least two days.

During times like these storms I am attuned to The Weather Channel and Accuweather.com to keep abreast of developments. And, I find myself chuckling when a NYC reporter complains about 4-5" of snow! The following weather picture I saved from Accuweather.com and I use it here fully acknowledging their rights with my gratitude. I use it as a reminder of what serious weather looks like on radar, as well as what happened on this particular day. The star on the map shows my approximate location.

This picture shows my garage on the morning of the 14th, after I had spent several hours plowing snow. A snow drift covers an iris bed near the fence just beneath a small wren house. I use the fence to grow clematises and roses; and at 48" high the drift to the left of it is equally 48" in height. It also extended across the driveway in front of the garage doors, but had been plowed out when this picture was shot. This is one for the record books locally, and I'm sure for many other locations across the midwest.

This a view looking east between my house & garage toward the road. My mailbox can be seen in the distance with snow piled everywhere around it. The sidewalk can be seen partially, and forms a "T" where the snowdrift is at right beside the shrub. Turning left leads to the driveway; turning right at the shrub leads to the front door. Since I had shoveled enough, I left the drift at right to melt; and we used only the back door going to the garage, or through the shortcut I shoveled around the drift.

Another view looking west between the house and garage. See if you can find my dog in this picture;~)
