A gorgeous orange lily (2-6 ft.) with recurved tepals (petals) with maroon spots. Each plant has 2 to 20 blooms in late spring/early summer. This plant will transform a shady garden into a woodland paradise! Light to heavy shade, does best for us planted with trees and shrubs, especially well among evergreens, the water uptake by the shrubs keeps the bulbs from rotting. Requires no to low summer water, well-drained soil. THIS IS NOT THE EASY-TO-GROW COMMON TIGER LILY, L. lancifolium or tigrinum, THIS IS A VERY PICKY GROWER AND VERY SLOW TO REACH BLOOM SIZE, GREATLY DISLIKES BEING MOVED ONCE ESTABLISHED. MUST HAVE EXCELLENT DRAINAGE, PREFERS TO GROW IN DRY SHADE WITH TREES AND SHRUBS.
GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS: Sow seed in fall when temperatures are about 60 degrees F for 2 months, seed will germinate and form a small bulb, then the seedlings require several weeks of chilling temperatures (35 degrees F) in order to form leaves when it warms up. Use a deep flat or pot, 4-6 inches, keep in the shade and water sparingly in the summer. Seed may take 3 years to grow to a bulb large enough to plant out.
Habitat: Coniferous woods and forest margins; low to subalpine elevations Bloom time: Late spring to early summer Range: British Columbia to California in the Cascades and east to Northwest Montana and Nevada. Cold Hardiness, Hardy to -34° C (-30° F), Zone 5
