For my own personal record all iris beds were sprayed today with systemic insecticide for control of iris borers. The weather today was (and is) perfect; with highs at 5:00 PM around 76 degrees F. Winds are relatively calm, and there is a feel of early summer. Trees, shrubs and other woody perennials are beginning to swell with buds (again) during the past few mild days. Hyacinths, daffodils and tulips are beginning to bloom nicely in spite of the bitter freezes 10 days ago.

This picture shows two iris gardens behind the house. For my own reference, as of today, April 21, everything has been re-trimmed following the subfreezing cold eleven days ago. Preen herbicide has been applied; the plants have been sprayed (today) for iris borer, and the soil has been tilled. This first picture is looking to the south, and contains only seedlings hybridized by me in the bottom half of the picture. There is a small separation between the two gardens by a narrow strip of grass running east to west. The garden at the top of the picture contains all named varieties of iris except for the row at far right.

This is the same two gardens looking in the opposite direction toward the north. These gardens were completely dug out and replanted last July. If I keep expanding this area the back yard will be non-existent.
