This iris easily bloomed from a first year rhizome in spite of some of the most severe weather I've seen in decades. The winter was fairly typical until early March 2007 when temperatures climbed into the 60's & 70's for three weeks in a row. Irises had put on lush growth and grew rapidly. By April 4th temperatures had fallen into the upper teens during the nights, and barely made freezing during the daytime. This killed back most of the foliage to the ground on all perennials and many shrubs. If there was ever a time to 'test' an iris this was it. Mango Smoothy re-grew its foliage and still managed to bloom!

In spite of bitter spring freezes this iris grew and bloomed beautifully. As it turned out this picture was taken in overcast weather with wind whipping up dust.
