With the extremely dry, arid weather conditions I feel compelled to add a weather update to my journal. It has now been at least four weeks since any significant rainfall has occurred. The lawn has completely dried out with grass turning brown, and I have curtailed mowing. Plants are stressed from lack of moisture, and show signs of wilting (drooping) beneath the scorching hot sun. Even the vegetable garden is suffering tremendously from the heat and lack of rainfall. Brown rose chafers have decimated the roses, and are attacking almost anything edible. Daylilies are sending up bloom stems, but seem to struggle to form buds. Container plants are checked and watered daily, however this is not possible with the "in-ground" annual and perennial plants. There is no rain in the forecast for several days yet, and even then the word 'chance' is over-used a lot.
