"We all know that
in daylilies first flowers and last flowers can be different not only in
appearance but also their level of fertility. Of course, this is
likely to be
caused by extrinsic (environmental) factors working on the epigenetics
of the
plant as much as intrinsic factors within the plant (such as nutrient &
hormonal factors). In some cultivars the differences can be dramatic
between
first and later flowers - such as HURRICANE SWIRLS. Personally, I tend
to avoid
pollinating the first one or two flowers on any scape as here I have
found that
they usually have much lower fertility than subsequent blooms. What I
also see
is that some cultivars that are difficult pod parents tend to produce
pods most
effectively on the last few flowers of the scape, and I know that
others have
made similar observations."
