Entries and Updates

This tutorial assumes you know how to edited an image in Irfanview for color, cropping and size. It also assumes you know how to save a file to a folder on your hard drive.

~~~
1. Open your photo in Irfanview (I am using version 3.91 as I write this).
2. Edit the color, contrast, gamma, etc. as you desire
3. Crop photo to desired size
4. Resize photo to desired dimensions
Now...
1. Click IMAGE > CANVAS SIZE
2. Enter the size (in pixels) you wish for each side's border
3. Click the "Choose" button next to "Border Color"
4. In the Color palatte box, pick the desired color
5. Click OK to save color
6. Click OK to add border
Step-by-step details with screen prints follow.
For example, I want to add a border to this photo:
To add a border, click IMAGE > CANVAS SIZE
You'll see there are four places to enter the desired width for your border, one each for top, bottom, left and right. In this case, I'm going to put in a border 15 pixels wide on each side.
As the color preview shows, the border will be black. I want another color, however. Click the "choose" button next to the color sample.
In the resulting color palette, choose the color you'd like. If you want to lighten or darken a color, you can fine-tune it on the right. You can also drag your mouse pointer around on the full spectrum and choose a color that way.
Click "add to custom colors" if you'd like to save your color for later use. Then click OK.
Now you'll see the chosen color in the preview space. Click OK.
Now my picture has a border 15 pixels wide, using the color that I chose.
If you're happy with the results, save your image by clicking the diskette icon or clicking FILE > SAVE-AS and naming your newly-edited file.
If you don't like the border, click EDIT > UNDO and the last change you made will be undone. At that point, you can go through the previous steps and change your border to something you like better.
Getting Fancy
Let's say I want my border a little fancier, maybe with a black line and then more pink. To do this, I just have to go through the above process a couple of times, each time choosing a different border width and color.
For the below image, I added a 2 pixel border of black, then added a 3 pixel border of a similar pink. In total, it took three applications using CANVAS SIZE.
But it was worth it:
