This member of the Papaveraceae family is an old garden favorite, making its annual appearance in late spring, then dying back to its thick roots before the height of summer.
The word Dicentra is from two Greek words -- dis, meaning 'two', and kentros meaning 'spurs'. This refers to the unusual flower shape.
The species name spectablis means showy, or worthy of notice.
The common name of Bleeding Heart comes from a Chinese legend that said the blossoms of the plant resembled a heart with a drop of blood. Other common names for this plant are Lady's Locket and our Lady in a Boat.

Placed seeds in sterile seed starting mix, and placed in freezer. Will remain in freezer until 3/10.

Moved to top of freezer for bottom heat.

Still no signs of life in the seeds. Went ahead and purchased five bulbs from Lowe's and planted in the shade garden near the oak tree and near the new seating area.
Roots were very brittle, so we'll see if they make it.
