After growing this for over four years, I'd forgotten to add it to my journal. Having bloomed today, it jogged my memory.
Blackbeard is a 'slow growing' iris (IMO), and rarely puts up more than one stem in a growing season. I wonder if this is somewhat characteristic of BB's in general. It was registered by John Weiler in 1988, and introduced at Rialto Gardens in 1989.
It is described as a "pale steel blue" with a blackish violet beard, and growing to 25". It is also listed as blooming M-VL. It received an HM in 1991, and an AM in 1993.

Windy conditions prevented me from getting a sharp-focus in this picture. And my aim was to show the beard in more detail. Sunlight and shadows were additional problems for me as well. (I fail to mention my lack of expertise with a camera.)

This overhead view gives some idea of the beards, however the shadows are a little distracting. More direct sunlight would have helped.

Here again, shadows are a problem for me; a little more direct sunlight would have made the picture clearer. A beautiful iris in any case!
