Initial Notes:

When we bought this country property many years ago it was populated by several species of native trees, and some non-native as well. The primary inhabitants were notably the white oaks and many invasives such as mulberry and autumn olive.

The master plan was to remove all the invasives, the dead wood and trash trees; among which were the ubiquitous slippery elms, aka "pith" elms and the mulberries. This task alone encompassed several years, a lot of hard work and determination.

Only the healthiest, sturdiest and most desirable were left, including two hickories which were only identified recently as Mockernut of the family juglandaceae, the genus carya, and the species tomentosa.

These two links provided the identification criteria: Hyperlink and Hyperlink

This is an early autumn photo of the pinnately compound leaves. They will turn a bright golden yellow as fall progresses. The compound leaf has three end leaflets larger than the basal leaflets, and may have as many as 7 to 11 total leaflets.

Here I've collected some of the nuts and displayed them on a paper towel on the kitchen counter. I've included some completely intact in the husk, while others are shown in various stages of emerging from, and completely out of the husk.
