A weeping/mounding laceleaf that holds deep purple red color all summer. This cultivar has the multi-dissected leaves of the dissectum type, but the pinnatifid cuts are not quite as deep as such forms as 'Ever Red' or "Crimson Queen." There is a little more width to the center of the lobe, making each appear slightly bolder. The 7 to 9 lobes radiate outward, terminating in an extremely fine tip. Leaves are 7 to 9 long and as much as 11 cm across. The red, stiff petiole is 3 to 4 cm long.
The new foliage is a deep crimson-red when unfolding, but soon changes to a verv dark purple-red. It is an excellent colour tone whichholds very well through the Summer. Growers in the eastern states report that it holds up extremely well in the combination of high heat and humidity. Fall colours are bright scarlet. The bark of the twigs and young branches is a deep maroon red, overcast with a whitish tone.
This is a hardy plant and is strongly cascading. It is an old cultivar, having been listed as eariy as 1710. The Japanese record old plants, 50 to 100 years old. which are up to 4 meters tall.
