      Feb 22, 2009
Started a flat of 72 cells, Shayla sprinkled lots of seeds and I mixed them lightly into the top layer of mix and firmed down.
Placed flat in finished basement - average temps. are between 60 and 70 degrees F.

      Mar 2, 2009
Moved one pack to heat mat upstairs.
    Moved one pack to upstairs.
(The temperature difference upstairs is between 5 & 10 degrees warmer than downstairs where the rest of the packs are.)

      Mar 5, 2009
Out of the two packs I moved upstairs - the one on the heat mat has a good amount of germination - 12 sprouts. The one not on the heat mat has 1 sprout. The packs still at slightly cooler temps. downstairs have 3 sprouts- that is out of 10 packs. This shows me that starting these seeds on a heat mat is definitely beneficial to quicker germination. I will be putting the entire flat on the heat mat.

This is a picture of the ones that germinated on the heat mat. Now that I have the rest of the flat on the heat mat there is about 30% germination beginning.

Good germination now, with use of the heat mat.

Pretty much all the cells in the flat on the heat mat have some germination in them. About 3 still have none. I have the dome off to begin weaning them from the high humidity it provides.

      Mar 13, 2009
Put the dome back on for overnight. Watered the cells that have not germinated with warm water

      Mar 19, 2009
Got them to having no dome. Tonight I took away the heat mat, for the first time.

      Mar 21, 2009
I transplanted excess seedlings to cells with little to no germination in them. All cells have about 5 seedlings in them.

These are ready to plant out, but I don't have a spot for them yet. Plus it is still early here, our last frost - safe date is Memorial Day Weekend. Although it has been so warm that I am tempted to do it soon.
