Initial Notes:

The zoom on this camera is controlled like a 35mm camera: on the barrel, not electronically. The macro switch is also on the barrel.

What threw me at first is, you can't zoom with the macro switched on - you can flip it with the lens fully wide or fully zoomed, but not in between. With the lens zoomed in fully and on macro, I can get about 7" away from the subject.

It's definitely not a super-close-range macro like some Canons, for instance, but with cropping I can still get in nice and close. I also have three threaded close-up lenses (+1 +2 and +4) I can add to the lens.

I've posted some shots here to demonstrate the differences in photos depending on the lens settings, distance, and add-on close-up lenses used. I had the flash intensity bumped down to -7 to compensate for the black background (the camera wanted to use more flash because of it, washing out the penny in the process). You'll notice in the later shots that the pictures are darker; that's because I left the flash intensity bumped down.

It's a learning process, and maybe this will help someone else.

MACRO EXAMPLE 1: 28mm no close-up lenses added

The image has not been cropped, just resized to 800x600. There were no closeup lenses used on this shot. The lens was on macro, with the unzoomed all the way wide, at 28mm. The complete EXIF info is below. In it you'll see the zoom, shutter speed, flash mode...All the nitty gritty. I will do this with each shot, mentioning whether or not one or more closeup lenses were added to the camera.

MACRO EXAMPLE 2: zoomed to 50.48 mm (all the way in), no close-up lenses added

Big difference! I was able to get closer, too. The image has not been cropped, just resized to 800x600.

MACRO EXAMPLE 3: zoomed to 50.48 mm (all the way in) and +1 close-up lenses added.

I don't see a big difference other than a darkening of the picture. The image has not been cropped, just resized to 800x600.

MACRO EXAMPLE 4: zoomed to 50.48 mm (all the way in) and +2 close-up lenses added.

Now, here I started seeing a difference. I was able to get closer to the subject with the +2 close-up lens added. The image has not been cropped, just resized to 800x600.

Yet more magnification, be it ever so slight. The image has not been cropped, just resized to 800x600.

MACRO EXAMPLE 6: zoomed to 50.48 mm (all the way in) and both +2 and +4 close-up lenses used together.

I was able to get closer yet with the addition of these combined lenses. I estimate I was about 6" from the subject. You can also see that, the more close-up lenses I combine, the shallower the depth of field becomes. Now the whole penny isn't even in focus. The image has not been cropped, just resized to 800x600.
