Aaaaaaargh!!! What a disaster! Here's the same island bed April 19, 2002 -- This is what happens when you (1) don't layer enough newspaper, (2) don't layer enough other organic material under your mulch and (3) start planting stuff way too soon.
*grumble, grumble, grumble*

The island bed, taken March 6, 2002. This is after we crawled around on our hands and knees, spading out grass and weeding. Oh, and then we raked off the cypress and put down hardwood mulch Howie's brothers delivered for us. Much better!
As of May 26, some grass is trying to grow there again, for Pete's sake. I suppose it's annual grass which is sprouting, but it could be coming back up through the mulch, I guess. I keep picking it out of there, though.

Soapwort blooming in corner bed along fenceline, May 10, 2002. I need to dig out the botanical name for this one, still.

The island bed out front, taken May 26, 2002. Things are really starting to flower and come together. :) I've put in sweet william, asters, lavender, lupine, delphinium, penstemon, coreopsis, crocosmia, candy lily, daylily, alyssum compactum, mullein, liriope, globe thistle...I can't think of the others off the top of my head!

Zepherine Droughin climbing rose. It's thornless and wonderful. Her flowers smell really fruity and sweet. :)
