This is a coarse textured, deep green, tough fern. Fronds are very pointed and are held in a upright vase shape pattern. Prefers neutral to slightly acid soils but can tolerate a fairly wide range of locations from shade to semi-shade. Distinctive black hairs are present along the back of the leaf stem, in the spring the croizers look like dogs paws emerging out of the ground.
This is a "rescued plant"; it was barely surviving in hard-packed clay near the edge of the pond. Irony of ironies, its tag was buried among the roots, and indicates it prefers very moist soil with organic matter.
Dug it up, placed it in water to loosen the clay from its roots, and planted it in heavily amended soil near the hose outlet, as that spot tends to stay damp.
