A native to North America, Gaura can be found in Texas and Louisiana and as far south as the central regions of Mexico.

A robust, clump forming perennial form from long branching stems, sparsely foliated with long oval leaves. Stems culminate in racemes of open petal flowers, which open a few at a time. The species tolerates drought, humidity and heat, flowering over an extended period of time.

Multitudes of deep rose butterfly-like flowers appear on dancing stems all summer. Performs best in sunny dry poor soils. Has long taproot, making it drought-tolerante. Can be a vigorous re-seeder; cut flower stalks to control reseeding (will let it seed freely this year to have lots of little babies to trade next year.)

G. lindheimeri was scarcely known in normal production nurseries until the introduction of Siskiyou Pink in 1994, a sport off the white-flowering parent.

Mr. Baldassare Mineo and his company Siskiyou Rare Plant
Nursery in Medford, Oregon, can claim responsibility for the introduction for the genus Gaura to mainstream perennial growers around the world. Three new sports have been introduced since then. (May want to look for Crimson Butterflies next year.)
