A clump-forming perennial, Monarda is native to the eastern U.S. from New York, west to Michigan and south in the Appalachian Mountains to Tennessee and northern Georgia. It occurs along wooded stream banks and in moist hardwood forests.
The whole plant is strongly impregnated with a delightful fragrance; even after the darkly-coloured leaves have died away, the surface rootlets give off the pleasant smell by which the plant has earned its common name 'Bergamot,' as it is reminiscent of the aroma of the Bergamot Orange.
Bee Balm is a very pretty herb with a wonderful fruity, minty aroma. The gorgeous, tubular red, pink, lavender or white flowers appear in mid and late summer. Once the plants have bloomed they may be cut back to obtain a second flowering and prevent re-seeding.
It is susceptible to powdery mildew - prevent by providing good airflow betwen plants and providing adequate moisture, keeping water off foliage, especially at dusk.
