Initial Notes:

I have grown this gorgeous Oriental Lily for well over 10 years. It is an excellent garden plant with beautiful bloom habits. Bees, butterflies and other insects are attracted to it. It is completely hardy here, and multiplies by bulb division and smaller bulblets which form at the stem just above the parent bulb. Not only is it a very pleasing flower, but is very fragrant too.

Entries and Updates

  Feb 7, 2006
This is a fairly close shot of two blooms on a rainy day. It is located in a semi-shaded area of the garden mixed with hostas and other perennials.

This is the same clump with a little wider view. Note that it seems grow and bloom well in a partially shaded location.

This picture was taken of the same group later in the day after the rain had stopped.

I am adding these pictures from the current blooms which are beginning to wind down for 2007. I want to note here that it has been a very dry summer here with very little rainfall, and plenty of heat and humidity. I seem to notice something different every time I see these flowers in bloom: The first thing to grab my attention today was the remarkable reflexing (recurving) of the flower petals. This picture will illustrate my point in a shot from July 21, 2007..

Here is another shot from July 21, 2007. It illustrates another point: Unlike some other Oriental lilies, most of the flowers face upwards rather than outward and down. I have found this cultivar can take a soggy soil for a period of time without ill effects. It is planted in a low-lying area which frequently gets saturated with water in spring.

Finally (for today) I want to add this picture of a single flower freshly opened. Its colors are much more subdued than some of the others I've posted. Also it is exposed to blazing July sun in this picture.
