Initial Notes:

planter 2 was a huge project relative to planter 1, and a lot of nice plants were purchased in April 05 specifically for that planter. THe idea was to make this the AGave planter, with aloes, too... but that sort of got forgotten as just about anything went in there... but it is MOSTLY larger agaves along the back wall. Planter 1.5 and 2.5 were added on later as places for a large Crassula gollum and a purple Bougainvillea. Planters 2.1 and 2.2 are itty bitty triangular add-ons put on in May for some Crassula arborescens and Aeoniums to go.

Planter 2 has gone through a lot of growing pains, and though it has continued to remain my favorite all along, I had to basically empty it out this year (2010). It was just a mess. At first the plan was to completely cover it with wooden slats to put plants and shelving on... but that didn't look good and was depressing waste of space. So then I just left a few boards in for putting plants on and for easy access to the wall behind so that I could trim the neighbor's aggressive bougainvillea and my own agressive Euphorbias and aloe. The south end was totally emptied save the Beuacarnea and the Furcraea. Now I am slowly filling it back in with aloes, though the wall end is sort of too shady and the Furcraea is keeping me from doing much with that section. The middle section now only consists of aloes (mostly new and smaller), though the Aloe Medusa, now taller than the fence, is against the back wall. The Bougainvillea (mine) has been chopped down as it never amounted to much anyway (though new growth keeps trying to climb up the wall). The north side was half emptied and the plan was to remove the larger aloes and agaves in the back and give them away, but Steve and Artie have not materialized, so there they sit. Sort of like them anyway, so may just leave as is. The two tree aloes are monsters now, with the barberae really growing into the cable lines now, Was NOT a wise move to plant that there, but still like it. Front section is new aloes and a few boards separate the two sections so I can put plants on it, and get to the Aloe barberae for more trimming in the future (or chop it down, I guess).

This is where the planter 2 will soon go, though not for 2 months. In the mean time, this is awhere a lot of the more sun sensitive plants went. Fence was to keep dogs out of the bulk of potted plants along the south wall where even more sun-sensitive plants went (mostly palms).

Here in the end of April 05 is the planter with plants starting to go in. Note the lattice is up already. But planter 2.1 had not been made yet (the small triangular planter)

Here the planter is 'completely filled' (Hah!) and even planters 2.1 and 2.2 (not seen in this photo) have been added. Also the tile bench we made was finished and put out.

This is a close up of north end early May 05 showing planter 2.2 filled- can also see planter 2.5 has been added and bougainvillea already planted in it. This pretty much finishes the west side of the yard... for now at least. May be more miniplanters between the cypress in years to come.

Planter and plants looking about the best they have ever looked, and though most of the plants in this planter look good eveyr day of the year, they look especially good this month. Bench in front in garage for repair at this time.

Here are things at the south end of the planter.. not too close together, but unfortunately sinking. Will redo this section soon and raise it up quite a bit.

End of the year when all this insanity started... things looking nice and colorful.. good contrasts. Bit crowded, which i actually anticipated... just not so soon.

Redid this end (south) of planter by taking everything out (some put elsewhere) and adding 3 large granite rocks, 2 bags of cactus soil and then putting things back in in a slightly different order. Soil slopes rapidly down to old level on other side of Nolina. May move and add soil to other side later. Then covered all with new pea gravel.
