Dozens of Juniperius chinensis cultivars exist with many different colors, sizes, shapes and unique characteristics. All are useful in landscape settings depending on needs such as privacy, as evergreen screens, to block the sight of an undesirable (or private) view in the nearby landscape. They may also provide physical barriers to humans and animals, and effectively exert traffic control. They transplant easily from pot to soil, are hardy, relatively maintenance free and add appeal. Landscape use depends much on the variety selected out of several dozens of cultivars, which can range from ground hugging covers, to spreaders (such as this one), to the 50-60' columnar types. 'Hetzii Glauca' - the one in this post, is a semi-erect spreader, this variety typically grows about 4' to 6' tall and 6 to 8' wide. The foliage is a blue-gray color. A great amount of care should be given when considering foundation plantings, since some cultivars are notorious for growing into large tree-like shrubs. Another note on care; this one responds well to pruning and shaping, and personally speaking, they MUST be kept under control.

Shown here up close as a foundation plant, it is roughly 4-4.5' in height and about as wide. Unfortunately, it would get higher than window-sill level, IF I let it; and I don't want any foundation shrub blocking the view out. Needless to say, I wouldn't dream of letting it go a summer without a close 'haircut'!

Another view behind the shrub looking to the lawn. This shot shows the color and detail of foliage much better than the picture above.
