Initial Notes:

This is my first year with MDB's, and I am finding some nice surprises with these, the smallest of irises. First I am finding them to be very hardy having endured their first winter at their new home away from Oregon. Another fact I noticed is their willingness to bloom after less than 10 months in the soil! I had a 'frost heave' with one during the freezes and thaws of early spring, but the rest came through OK. Of the ten new MDB's I have started, it appears 7 or 8 have formed flower buds, and one, 'Alpine Lake' has NINE (9) buds! It is showing azure blue color and I expect it to open on Saturday, April 22. So I am happy with the new family additions, after years and years of growing primarily TB's, IB's & SDB's.

The following is from the American Iris Society's Checklist data base: (A. & D. Willott, R. 1980). Sdlg. 78-51. MDB 6" 115 cm) M-L. "S. white, slightly tinged blue; F. light blue (RHS 104D); pale blue beard. 74-46: (Carousel Princess x Gunga Din) X Greenlee GX-11., Willott 1981. "

Entries and Updates

This clump of Alpine Lake has been planted less than 10 months. Its growth and development seem extraordinary for such a tiny plant. The clump itself barely measures five inches at the base from left to right. I count nine flower buds with four (4) showing color!

I expected at least one bloom today from this iris, but got four! The flowers are so tiny! After years and years of raising the TB's I'm amazed at these little ones and their tenacity to bloom.

This is my first update in 2007, and it looks like my photographic skills are beginning to show some improvement:~)

A close view of a single flower. (Photography's a little fuzzy here)

This is the same clump shown in the preceding entries. I counted 23 blooms on this clump! Probably the most floriferous MDB in the bunch.
