A beautiful sight in spring, this native tree is common throughout the midwestern area covering many states. It ranges from Michigan, eastern and southern Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Pennsylvania well into the Appalachian mountain states. It is termed an 'understory' tree because of its like of shaded conditions among tall oaks, maples, beech and other hardwoods. A fungal disease known as Dogwood Anthracnose, a leaf and stem disease has spread across the area in many states affecting (and destroying) many trees.

A close view of a blossom this spring. This is a collected tree many years ago from a wooded area nearby. I dug and replanted it as a young sapling. Today it is approximately 12' in height.
