Just a spring baby, purchased from NEWFS. When I bought this in April it was only the cutback stems of last year in the pot. It didn't start growing for sometime after I planted it.

Picture of young leaves, so I can be sure to recognize it next spring.

I should plant it in a sunnier location. I just don't have a spot yet. Considering it's in a partly shady area, it has done very well. It is just beginning to bloom, which seems a couple weeks or more behind others I've seen in my area blooming. It seems much shorter than what they generally are too. Hopefully next year I can give it a better spot, if my husband gets the backyard in order.

I had Hibiscus sawfly larvae on my plant. I just found out what they were, today. I thought they were a caterpillar so I was hesitant to kill them all. Now I know better. UMass recomends using a product that contains spinosad, if hand control is not enough. I got a nice picture of a bloom on August 26 2006, and you can see some damage from the larvae as well. The picture above is of the full plant and you can see all the damage at the bottom of the plant back in August. I was handpicking them once I saw the damage they were doing, but the plant has more damage on it now. Which is fine because it's done for the season now that we got a frost last night. Next year I'll be ready for the buggers!
