Initial Notes:

Propagation by seed: plant 1/8 inch deep in well drained media. Germinates in 30 to 80 days at 50 F. May be slow and irregular to germinate. Requires cold cycling.

Other propagation methods: division

Care: Will tolerate part shade but prefers full sun. Consistent moisture is important – they don’t like to dry out, but they like well-drained soil. Bloom July to August. Height 0.25 to 0.5 ft. Width: 0.25 ft. Some sources list as hardy in zones 7 and 8 only, others say 4 to 9. I have seen wild ones growing here in my zone 6 area.

Description: Dwarf relative of the Iris. Low tuft forming leaves with starry glowers.

Bellum – amethyst purple (rarely white) flowers. Branched stems with linear leaves.

Littorale – violet-blue, orange-eyed flowers with grassy foliage.

Californicum (yellow-eyed grass) – yellow flowers and sword shaped leaves.

Stratum (satin flower) – cream colored flowers striped with purple. Sword shaped leaves.

Angustifium (Bermuda) – Grassy foliage and clusters of bell shaped flowers.

Uses: Clump forming plant grown for iris like flowers and grassy foliage.
