Highlights: aromatic

Propagation by seed: difficult to propagate by seed. Can be sown in spring or fall, needs special handling.

Care: hardy in zones 5 to 9

Description: Aromatic shrub, native to Maritimes. Astringent action of foot bark abates diarrhea and hemorrhages and is a gargle, soothes sore throats. Wax-covered berries are used to make aromatic candles and soap. Berries are boiled in water, liberating the wax which floats to the surface. Berries produce blue dye and with various mordants, leaves produce yellow, gold and greyish-green dyes.

Uses: candle and soap scent; dye
