Grandma D's Gingerbread

1/2 cups sugar
1 cup molasses
1 egg
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp salt
1 cup hot water
2 1/2 cups flour (ap)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves

Mix together the flour, soda, salt, cloves, cinnamon and ginger, set off to the side.
In a seperate bowl, mix together the sugar, molasses, egg and oil. Add the dry mix and mix until blended. Add the hot water and mix well.
Pour in to a greased 9x11 pan and bake at 325 for 40-45 minutes.
Vanilla Sauce
1/2 cup sugar
2 tbsp cornstarch
1/4 tsp salt
2 cups water
1/4 cup margarine
2 tsp vanilla or lemon juice
Mix all ingredients, in a saucepan and boil until thickened.

This is my husbands favorite recipe that his mom passed on to me.
