Southern Fried Green Tomatoes

3 large firm green tomatoes
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup flour
3/4 cup yellow cornmeal

Cut tomatoes into about 12 slices. in a medium bowl,
combine the egg,milk,1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon
pepper and beat until well blended. In another bowl,
combine the flour and cornmeal. In a deep cast iron
skillet over medium/high heat,pour oil to depth of 1/2
inch. Dip tomato slices in egg mixture to coat evenly,
then dip into cornmeal mixture,shaking off any excess
and wiping your hands to avoid build-up. Fry the tomatoes
in batches of three,turning once until the coating is
crisp and light brown. Drain on paper towels.

  Extra Notes  
HINT: you can fry a few strips of bacon in the oil
first for added flavor,remove bacon before frying tomatoes.
