Honest To Goodness Baked Beans

4 c. great northern or navy beans, cleaned
1 c. chopped ham-OR- 8 slices fried bacon
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. packed, brown sugar
1/2 c. molasses
2/4 tsp. chili powder
1 large chopped onion
1 small chopped green pepper
1/2 c. chili sauce -OR- catsup
2 c. diced, canned tomatoes

Soak beans in hot water for 2 hours, and pour off liquid. Cover with fresh water and cook with ham or bacon until done. About 1 hour. Add salt, brown sugar, molasses, chili powder, onion, green pepper, chili sauce, and tomatoes. Put in a large casserole dish and bake 4 hours at 350 degrees. Stir occasionally. If too dry add a lttle hot water.

  Extra Notes  
These hot, fragrant beans are a real treat; and well worth the effort.
