I was going to ask for advice before I started planting, but I decided I'd just stop dithering and DO this project.
So how did I do?
Starting point: a nasty too-sloped little bed that bordered the front of my filter pond. Nothing to recommend it but a crape myrtle and birdbath that I love, and a salvia that had managed to survive:
