A befuddled mind can still grow a beautiful plant! My stumbling journey toward successfully growing a Tree Dahlia (Dahlia imperialis), which was received as a free gift in a Dave's Garden plant trade by mail, and what I learned along the way.
Could it be so happy because it offers hope for cancer treatments? The Xi Shu (translated as "Happy Tree"), Camptotheca acuminata, is native to warm, humid stream banks south of the Yangtse River in China and Tibet. Though it is not a new introduction to the Western Hemisphere, it is apparently not often grown outside of China. It is rare enough, in fact, that our Dave's Garden Plant Files had no record of it!
The plant looks stunning in the store display and you can't resist buying it; or maybe some well-intentioned friend who knows that you love gardening bought a festively wrapped plant for you, but beware! If the plant comes in a foil wrapped container or some other ornamental pot with no drainage, your plant may be well on the way to death by drowning!
