You've wanted to build that new deck in the backyard for some time now, but with lumber prices sky high it has never gotten done. Welcome in the $150 deck, I know I can hear you saying "how is that possible?". Well it isn't as easy as taking the truck down to your local home improvement store and loading up several hundred (or thousand) dollars in lumber, or for that matter paying a contractor to build it for you. But with some basic carpentry skills and a few tools you can do this. Many of the larger home improvement stores have free handouts on small projects like building a deck. Or visit your local library or one of the many home improvement websites for more in depth carpentry instructions.
No doubt everyone here on Dave’s Garden has heard of compost, most often it is the whispered secret between avid gardeners. You’ve probably had a few of these conversations, when you look in amazement at one of your neighbors gigantic prized tomatoes and ask “how’d you do that?”...they look all around suspiciously then lean in and whisper, “It’s my special compost.”
Your house has been inundated by all your plants that cant survive the winter outside, you’ve been dreaming of the sunroom over the deck out back for some time now. You’ve probably even priced out the commercial versions, disappointed at the cost. I had these same problems, the solution? I built my own sunroom from recycled materials for under $35 out of pocket. Now I know this wont work for everyone, and if you have to put a roof over your sunroom it will increase the cost quite a bit. That said all of you out there with a covered porch or deck this is easily doable.
