On The Hunt For The Mighty Morel

In early spring, my otherwise very normal friends become secretive--talking in code about places with names like “the outback”, “the mother lode”, and “snake hill”. They guard the location of these spots with the ferocity of a mother bear protecting her cub, because, you see, they are mushroom hunters. For over ten years I watched this behavior in my friends and dismissed mushroom hunters as an odd breed…until I joined them once…on the hunt for the mighty morel!

I visit my grandpa in a nursing home several times a week, and we frequently talk about the beautiful potted flowers throughout the facility. Some are brought in as gifts to the residents from family and friends, others are donated by local groups for the residents to enjoy. Here’s how a simple observation by Grandpa led to a second chance for some gorgeous spring bulbs.

Cilantro falls into the same category as spinach, asparagus, and the scent of patchouli--people either love it or hate it. At my house we are true cilantro lovers and can't get enough of it; on the other hand my brother insists that it tastes like soap. I think maybe that's just residue from all those years of talking back, but in any case don't let his opinion sway you--give cilantro a try!
