We live in a modest clapboard house in a typical blue-collar neighbourhood nestled beside Lake Ontario in Canada. Our winters are generally cold and snowy, but last year we had little snow, our lettuce lasted into October, and we struggled with imported pests and bouts of drought mixed with drenching downpours. It was also the year we fell in love with gardening.
