It is that time of year again. Bouquets of red roses, chocolates and diamonds wrapped with red ribbon will be arriving at homes and offices around the world. Here, we will take a look at a different kind of gift, one that will last far longer than a box of chocolates or bouquet of cut flowers.
Victorians used flowers to share their feelings and it seems there is a bloom to represent every emotion known to man. Everyone knows the rose represents love. In the language of flowers, there are many that say love. For instance, the anemone represents unfading love, gladiolus represents love at first sight, baby's breath represents everlasting love, maidenhair fern represents secret bond of love and the list goes on. A recent Dave's Garden article, "How to make a Victorian Tussie-Mussie" by Stephanie Boles includes a list of flowers and their meanings from Victorian times.

Valentine's Day is set aside each year as a day for people celebrate their love with gifts and togetherness. What better day than this to start a new tradition for those whose hearts beat as one? Instead of giving cut flowers and chocolates that will be gone within two weeks, bring home a plant for the yard or patio that will last for many years to come.
