Taken on 10th July 2007, Lincoln UK. It appeared in a picture I was taking of a water skater nymph, coming from under the edge of the pond.
Taken on 4th August 2007, it appeared when a water skater was feeding on a dead fly, several other skaters fled!
They feed on larvae of mosquitoes and other insects, piercing their prey through the surface of the water and sucking out their juices!
There are only two species in one Genera of the Family Hydrometridae in Britain, they are 7-12mm in length.
It runs on water (doesn't skate) without breaking the surface, at quite a speed.
